Unseasonal
snow and freezing rain led to an ice storm in central North Carolina. This
coated the trees and power lines with a quarter to a half inch of ice, which
caused power outages for about 1.5 million people (including me, for five
days), and brought down trees and branches all over the city. Thankfully
Duke has all its power lines underground, so we were able to camp out in
the Biology Department overnight. Unless a tree limb fell on your car (poor
Catarina) it was mildly inconvenient and spectacularly beautiful.
This
is what I saw from my front yard in the morning. Not many folks driving
in today. And I suspect the firewood prices will go through the floor this
winter.
The
trees clattered and jingled when you brushed them. Some of the pines were
top-heavy and bowed completely to the ground. All night I heard the crash
of branches onto my roof.
East
Campus, deserted and white. The Baldwin Dome seemed to be shedding great
sheets of ice.
My
bike was completely encased when I got to the department. This is my archetypal
"bike covered with ice on the cover of an undergraduate poetry magazine"
shot.
